Muscogee Co. Sheriff's deputy arrested on alleged battery charge

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A law enforcement officer in Columbus was arrested on Monday on an alleged battery charge.

Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr confirmed that Mark Whaley, 37, was arrested and charged with battery with physical visible harm.

The incident that Whaley was arrested for occurred while Whaley was a member of the Columbus Police Department, where he worked in the jail. He was a member of CPD for more than five years, and recently transferred to the sheriff's office.

The name of the victim and the nature of the allegations are not being released.

Whaley was arrested around 11 a.m. on Monday. Darr said Whaley is now on unpaid administrative leave following his arrest.
