ST. JOSEPH, MI (RNN) - A man killed two court bailiffs and injured at least two others, including a sheriff's deputy, before officers fatally shot him at the Berrien County Courthouse on Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Paul Bailey said the shooting happened on the third floor around 2:30 p.m. eastern time. The gunman, identified as Larry Darnell Gordon, was a jail inmate who was being moved from a holding cell at the courthouse when he disarmed an officer and started shooting.

"A fight occurred with that inmate on the way to the courtroom. He was trying to escape," Bailey said.

Gordon was jailed on several felony charges, according to the Associated Press.

The wounded deputy was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he was in stable condition. An unspecified number of other people were also sent to the hospital with injuries.

"They went for shelter after the shooting occurred, and other brave officers went to their rescue after they were able to take the shooter down," Bailey said.

The slain officers were identified as Joseph Zangaro, 61, and Ronald Kienzle, 63.

Michigan State Police secured the Berrien County Courthouse about half an hour after the shooting broke out, according to Gov Rick Snyder.

Snyder, in a tweet, said law enforcement had secured the scene and started an investigation.

"Please join me in praying for those affected," Snyder said on Twitter. "We will share more information here from MSP as it becomes available."

St. Joseph is a resort town of about 9,000 people, located in a popular summer vacation area along southern Lake Michigan on the state's western shore.
