COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Samarc Foundation's annual basketball camp is underway at CSU.
Kids from elementary all the way through high school are participating over the next three days. It's all led by former N-B-A player and coach Sam Mitchell.
Mitchell is fresh off a term with the Minnesota Timberwolves as interim head coach. He wouldn't miss the opportunity to join up with his friend Marc Upshaw to hold this camp once again.
This camp is more than just crossovers, dunks, and three-pointers. It's a chance to teach them life lessons.
"This isn't just about basketball in sports," Mitchell said. "My friend Marc says it best. Basketball is the carrot that draws them here. Once they get here, we expose them to a lot of different things."
His friend Marc is Marc Upshaw, one of the leaders of the camp.
"You learn so much from the sport," Upshaw said of basketball. "I mean it's unbelievable. I mean the game of life is something in itself. It teaches you the ups and downs, teaches you about wins and losses..."
They also brought in speakers from different walks of life to teach kids important life lessons off the court. About 200 kids showed up to the camp, it will go on over the next couple of days.
