LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – Lee County law enforcement officials have confirmed that a high-speed chase took place on I-85 NB in Lee County Wednesday.
The chase ended near the Tiger Town exit. The suspect allegedly stole the vehicle and took off, prompting a chase. The suspect, who has not been named, is in police custody.The vehicle was reported stolen from Lee County.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said the suspect was driving northbound and being pursued by police after a call was made to police of a suspicious person in a vehicle traveling on U.S. 80. Lee County sheriff's deputies made contact with the car as it began to travel into Opelika City limits.
The suspect attempted to avoid spike strips in the road, turning around in the middle of the interstate, nearly hitting a deputy's car, Jones said, and continued to travel northbound in the southbound lane. The suspect was boxed in by police, but escaped, nearly being struck by an 18-wheeler and attempted to pass it on the inside lane on the bridge at exit 60, continuing to travel northbound in the southbound lane.
The vehicle did come to a stop there and the suspect was taken into custody. Sheriff Jones also said a shot was fired, and the circumstances are currently being investigated.
I-85 NB is at a crawl and I-85 SB is shut down at this time. Law enforcement officials are working to get the interstate back open. None of the law enforcement officers nor the suspect were injured during this incident.
