LOACHAPOKA, AL (WTVM) - Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirms a sixth grade student at Loachapoka Elementary brought an unloaded gun to school Thursday morning.
Sheriff Jones says a classmate of the student alerted teachers to the weapon.
School administrators retrieved the handgun and notified school resource officers.
Sheriff Jones says the student was not arrested, and the case is being turned over to the Lee County District Attorney's Office for prosecutors to decide if charges need to be filed.
A parent of a student sent us a copy of the letter sent home to Loachapoka parents detailing the incident at school.
