AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - One of the stars of the Netflix hit series "Orange is the New Black" made a visit to the Plains on Thursday night.
Jackie Cruz, also known as Marisol "Flaca" Gonzales in the series, was the guest speaker for the kickoff of the annual Hispanic Heritage Month at Auburn University.
The event, presented by the Cross-Cultural Center for Excellence, took place in the Foy Hall Auditorium.
Cruz spoke about how she experienced diversity growing up and also acknowledged her platform as an actress who can inspire people in Hispanic heritage month.
"We are talking about issues that are happening right now and that's again why our show is important," Cruz said. "We're opening conversations at the dinner table, at maybe the president's office who knows… and we're making people talk about it and we're making people know that there is a situation."
Cruz also shared her story "CRUZing through Adversity," giving the audience a close look into the ups and downs of her life before her recent vault into stardom.
