COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Twenty-one teachers from five area schools participated in training on Tuesday to learn about empowering parents and finding alternatives to traditional student discipline.

The "Champions of Character" camp was held at Baker Middle School, where teachers participated in assignments to help them increase parental involvement as a means to improving academic performance.

The program also looks at ways in decreasing discipline initiatives.

Baker Middle School principle Ramona Horn spoke with us about the impact the event hopes to have.

"We are looking for alternatives to suspension and along those lines hopefully we can empower our parents to gain the skills they need for parenting," Horn said.

The event was hosted by Dr. Charles Flowers, a coach in the Muscogee County School District for 23 years and currently the associate A.D. at Point University.
