COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The season of giving is already underway for hundreds of women who met in Columbus for a special luncheon.
Tuesday, Nov. 15 marked the 5th annual Power of the Purse Luncheon, hosted by the United Way's Chattahoochee Valley's Women's Leadership Council.
The group asked women to bring new undergarments to donate to local women and girls. Organizers found them to be one of the biggest needs in the local community.
"Overwhelmingly, one of the needs was underwear," said community volunteer Tana McHale. "Many women give their used and lightly worn clothes, but nobody donates underwear. Women come into different agencies and need, and can get clothes, but they couldn't get underwear."
Last year the group collected more than 2,000 undergarments, and they expect a similar count this year as well.
