(WTVM) - November is Prematurity Awareness Month, and Thursday, Nov. 17 is recognized worldwide as World Prematurity Day.
Premature birth – which is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy – is the number one killer of babies in the U.S., and the leading cause of death of children younger than 5 around the world.
Babies who survive an early birth often face serious and lifelong health problems, including breathing problems, jaundice, vision loss, cerebral palsy and intellectual delays.
The March of Dimes is encouraging people to wear purple on Thursday to help raise awareness. Be sure to snap a photo and post it to social media with #worldprematurityday and #givethemtomorrow.
