COLUMBUS, GA/PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - The Black History Month Observance Committee and Congressman Sanford Bishop handed a hefty check to one historical staple in the Columbus community.
On Tuesday, the Liberty Theatre was awarded with a check from the committee.
The committee supports institutions that either provide essential services to underserved populations or to institutions that preserve and or display the cultural history of African Americans in the Chattahoochee Valley Area, much like the Liberty Theatre.
"The Liberty is a staple in the community because we employ so much local talent," said Dr. Shae Anderson, executive director. "So this will definitely help to get some of the facilities challenges taken care of around here that we kind of face on a daily basis."
In the past, the committee has awarded funding to critical organizations like the House of Mercy, the African American History Museum and the Liberty Theater.
