COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The driver of the vehicle involved in a car accident that claimed the lives of two children in Columbus on Saturday has been arrested.
Francisca Taperia-Santiago, 32, has been charged with homicide by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, child restraint, unsafe tires, no state driver's license, and reckless conduct causing harm and endangering safety.
According to the Muscogee County coroner, 6-year-old Juliana Taperia and 13-year-old Jose Taperia, who were cousins, were pronounced dead at Midtown Medical Center following the single-vehicle accident on I-185 N near Victory Drive.
A total of eight children and two adults were in the Chevy Trailblazer heading east on Victory Drive when the vehicle hit a guard rail and the embankment and then rolled down the hill multiple times.
The possible cause of the accident was an excessive rate of speed. No one was wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
