COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The sponsor of a bill to allow casino gambling in Georgia says the effort is dead for the year.
State Senator Brandon Beach says he doesn't have enough votes to get the bill out of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee.
The senator says he will travel around Georgia before the next legislative session to promote the idea.
Taxes on gambling would have supported college scholarships along with rural hospital grants.
Some local community leaders had been pushing to build a casino in South Columbus as a potential economic boost to bring jobs to an underdeveloped area.
