Columbus woman, 71, to hike the entire Appalachian Trail

(WTVM) - May McDaniel starts her journey of hiking the Appalachian trail Thursday, March 16.

The 71-year-old plans to walk the entire trail. She will begin the hike in Georgia and end at Mount Katahdin in Maine.

"I am a veteran, I was a Girl Scout. This is not the first time I've  ever been outdoors, but it's certainly the first time I've been outdoors for this length of time,"  said McDaniel. "I'm excited, I'm nervous, and everybody that tells me that they're going to be watching me and following me helps me get ready to do this," she added.

To prepare for the hike, McDaniel trained with a world champion rock climber Marc Heileman at Treadstone Climbing Gym in Columbus. She also previously hiked an entire Pine Mountain, GA trail in two days.

In support of her journey, McDaniel set up a GoFundMe account called Destination 100. She explains that Destination 100 represents her plan to live to be 100 years old and to live every day of it.
