COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Midtown Medical Center and LifeLink of Georgia honor patients who choose to provide the gift of life.

During a ceremony Thursday, the hospital raised the Donate Life flag.

It continues to fly throughout the month of April in tribute to organ donors and recipients.

Amber Downs a hospice nurse in Columbus received a new kidney and spleen in 2008.

She says without those lifesaving organs she would not be alive today.

"I love getting up every day and feeling healthy. I am truly grateful for every single day that I get to wake up and contribute to society and spend time with my family," said Downs.

April is designated at Donate Life Month.

LifeLink of Georgia says one organ donor can potentially save the lives of eight people, and improve the lives of 70 more through tissue donation.
