Columbus community talks new developments to replace closing businesses

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus has recently seen a number of popular businesses leave the area and now the city is wondering what potential businesses will come next to fill its place.

News Leader 9 took to the community to hear what people want to see replace the recently closed businesses like Sears, Kmart, and Hhgreg.

Residents named places like Dave and Buster's, The Cheesecake Factory, Bass Pro Shop and a skydiving facility.

After reaching out to multiple businesses to see if they have an interest in open retail in Columbus, Bass Pro Shops responded by saying,

"Much research and many factors are taken into consideration for Bass Pro Shops retail store placement. Some of these include the availability of outdoor opportunities in the region; the number of sporting licenses sold in the area; interstate or highway accessibility and much more."

Executive Vice President of Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Bill Murphy says, "As nice as it is to go after some of these retailers they do have some pretty strict parameters we do have to work within."

He says consultants help lure businesses to the area.

Whatever comes to these vacant spots some residents are making one request.

They say anything that's fun, new or entertaining.
