WAVERLY, AL (WTVM) - There's a new mayor in Waverly Hall, and he is making history as the city's first African-American mayor.
Michael Harris was sworn in tonight as the city's first black mayor. Harris has served on the city council in this small Harris County community for more than 20 years.
A big crowd was on hand at city hall for the swearing-in ceremony. Harris sees his election as a great way to help the community grow.
"I think it'll be an opportunity to see some fresh ideas. As the mayor, it would lead to more of a vision toward the community, and the way we want the town to grow and progress in the future," says Harris.
Waverly Hall has a population of about 800 people, and many in the community say that they are excited about what the future holds for the city.
