WAVERLY HALL, GA (WTVM) - Strongpoint shooting range in Waverly Hall is offering classes to youth ages 9-17 on gun safety in order to cut down on home accidental shootings.

The classes will include the proper way to store, load and knowledge of when to use a firearm. They will also introduce the different types of firearms.

The director of training at Strongpoint says that studies show 1.7 million adolescents are exposed to firearms in the home which roughly translates to one in every three homes. Around 25,000 of those kids were killed due to an accidental shooting.

"I feel that if we kind of stick to the fundamentals of safety like; triggering a gun if it's always loaded, never point at a gun unless you intend to destroy, keep your finger off the trigger and know what's your target and what's beyond it.  these simple safety rules we can illuminate a lot of these issues," said Brian Schacht; Director of Training at Strongpoint

Course instructors are NRA certified military level that currently provides training to local, state, federal law enforcement and military.

Strongpoint wants to make clear they are not promoting kids to have guns they just want to make sure those who have them in their home remain safe.

Classes will begin on Sunday at 1 p.m. You can call and sign up by calling 706-573-5726.
