COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus State University professor was honored for displaying leadership, professionalism, self-reflective practices, and mentorship.

Dr. Jan Gunnels Burcham, Columbus State University professor of early childhood education, was recognized as the 2017 Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator.

Burcham has been an educator in early childhood and higher education for more than 30 years. She has spent 14 years at CSU where she also serves as the Interim Associate Dean for Curriculum and Faculty Development and Fletcher Distinguished Chair in Teacher Education.

"I'm very appreciative and thankful of this opportunity," said Burcham. "It isn't just for me, it is also for all of the people who have collaborated with me along the way."

Among Burcham's accomplishments include co-authoring two books, publishing multiple research articles, contributing internationally in a collaborative effort to develop a curriculum for preschool children in China, and much more.

She has also served on the governing board for the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Educators.

Consideration for the Outstanding Early Childhood Teacher Educator award is based on peer-nomination. Burcham was nominated by three educators.
