Family of Columbus woman killed 20 years ago still seeks answers

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - One family in Columbus is still seeking answers to the murder of a Columbus woman 20 years ago.

It happened on Talbotton Road at Ashley Station, formerly known as the Peabody Apartments. The family says they are still seeking to understand why anyone would want to take Laura Chaney's life.

"She was a fun, sweet, and loving person. You know, didn't try to hurt or harm nobody," says her sister Mary Harris.

Her family comes together every year to celebrate her life and birthday in the place where she spent the final seconds of her life. Today was a special day. It's her 57th birthday. Her family says that they want to continue the memory of her joyous spirit by celebrating and singing.

They say they no longer hold grudges against whoever's responsible.

"I forgive you. I had to forgive you in order for me to get closure and that's what my mother would want. But I feel like it's time now. We deserve answers to the questions we have," explained Tonja Brown.

Questions they say they will continue to ask until someone is behind bars. They say that if anyone knows anything about what happened that night to please come forward to law enforcement.

"We all miss her dearly. Like my older sister said, we just want justice, so if anybody knows anything or anybody thinks they may know anything could you please just come forward and give any, any, any statement you can to help us out during this please," says Tara Davis.

Police are still investigating the cold case and say anyone with information on the murder of Laura Chaney should call the police.
