PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. partnered with several other community service agencies for a program entitled "Silence the Shame."
The event raised awareness about mental health concerns that youth face today.
It took place this afternoon at South Girard School in Phenix City, AL.
Students participated in workshops addressing such things as bullying and how negative behavior can affect your mental health.
They were also taught coping skills for managing stress.
17-year-old Jordan Watson says it is important to erase the stigma for those seeking services for mental illness
"I know that in our youth it is a hindrance to be able to come out and talk about it and articulate that," says Jordan Watson of Northside High School.
According to the Jason Foundation, teenagers and young adults die more frequently from suicide than illness such as cancer and heart disease
