AUBURN, AL (WTVM) – When it comes to being prepared for an active shooter incident, Auburn University is planning ahead.

“Our goal is to provide those in need of such life-saving information the tools by which to act with best practices,” said Chance Corbett, interim executive director for Auburn University’s Department of Campus Safety and Security.

The University is leading the way in training the public in how to handle an active shooter situation. “What we did really rubbed off on a lot of agencies,” Said Corbett.

“Decisions are hard to make.” explained Corbett, “You throw a little stress in there and it makes it even harder

One common response when an active shooter situation occurs is to lock the door and turn the lights off, Corbett says this tactic has not been successful in recent incidents.

“Take the things that are in the room and barricade it up against the door. Even if the door opens outward before they can even do anything they have to climb through the stuff. Law enforcement is only minutes away so we just have to buy ourselves moments maybe minutes to let Law enforcement get there and deal with the situation.”
