COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Muscogee County School board voted in favor of selling the old Bibb Elementary School building now with plans to restore it.
The school board sold the building for $15,000 to a former State Representative, Earl Davis. With the building being now 103 years old, the roof has collapsed and is considered a danger zone.
Davis plans to stabilize the building into apartments or a group home.
The Muscogee County School board has spent between $6,000 - $10,000 a year trying to maintain the historic building—by keeping it boarded and cutting the grass.
People in the community say they are glad to hear something good is being done.
"I think it would be a good idea to restore that building, it's a lot of history in that building. A lot of these houses are getting remodeled helping the neighborhood," said James Benton, who works on houses in the neighborhood
The goal is to restore the building as much as possible without tearing it down
