COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus family says they are trying to stay strong and bring their family even closer together after a shooting at an apartment complex Friday night. The shooting claimed the life of Kenyon Thomas.

His family says it should have never happened.

"It's sad that it takes this to bring us all together, but at the same time I'm happy that we have this much unity over one person," says Keyshondel Davis.

Davis says he and  Kenyon Thomas were the best of friends. He says they were so close that they called each other family. Thomas' family says they never would have imagined losing their loved one to a shooting at the Arbor Pointe Apartments.

"I cry a lot. I cried at work today. I'm trying not to cry now, but I mean I'm going to be there for her no matter what," says Mallory Thomas.

Mallory is referring to Kenyon Thomas' eight-month-old daughter, Skyliah Thomas. She says they held a family gathering in the park just across from where the shooting happened to strengthen the connection with their family members as well as celebrate and honor the life of  Kenyon Thomas.

"They don't know the real Ken. He really was the sweetest man you could know. He wasn't with all the gangbanging and the shooting and the drugs," Mallory Thomas says.

The family says they believe they know the truth about what happened, but don't want to disclose that information. They say they're hoping whoever is responsible will be brought to justice.

The family will announce funeral arrangements soon. They have set up a GoFundMe account  to help cover funeral expenses.
