COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan has confirmed the man shot and killed by a Columbus police officer has been identified as Damion Collier, 24, of Columbus.

Bryan said Collier was shot multiple times during the shooting at Wilson Homes Apartments near 35th Street and River Road Wednesday afternoon.

"Two police officers fired their weapons striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to Piedmont Regional Hospital," says Police Chief Richard Boren.

Collier was pronounced dead at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital around 5:23 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say Collier had active warrants for his arrest.

"There were warrants outstanding for the individual. We had warrants for aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, and others. We were in the process of obtaining other warrants for his arrest," explained Boren.

Police tried to make contact with him as he was leaving the area in a vehicle. That's when he reached for a gun, according to Chief Rickey Boren.

Two police officers then shot at him.

A woman whose condition is unknown was also in the car with Collier.

Police said Collier is linked to two separate murders in Columbus including one murder that happened April 1 on Andrews Road.

"From this point in time on, the GBI will handle the shooting part of the investigation and the Office of Professional Standards of the Police Department will handle the secondary investigation," Boren said.
