COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - People in the Midtown area of Columbus are speaking out after plans to build a new housing development becomes more of a reality.

If completed, the multi-million project by an Atlanta area contractor would be located at the corner of Hilton Avenue and Wynnton Road.

The possibility of the housing project is getting mixed reactions from the community.

"It's not just a midtown issue, but a Columbus issue," said Tyler Pritchard who has called Midtown home for almost a year.

The wooded area is causing concern for many residents has sat vacant for years.

But an Atlanta-based company’s proposal to build a 94-unit, multifamily affordable housing complex on the almost 6-acre site is not in favor with many people who call the area home.

"It's really not that big, so that means the only way for the buildings to go is up, and frankly as a community, we don't see that fitting in over here," said Pritchard.

Traffic, location density, and environmental issues and mostly change all concerns by area residents.

On the other side, developers hope the housing will bring life to the area.

"The preliminary numbers show that the city has a huge need for affordable housing for its resident, so it's not only a good thing for the residents, it's good for the commercial developments in the area," said Principal of TBG Residential, Kevin Buckner.

Members of Midtown and Columbus plan to fight the building of this development, Hosting community meetings titled, "Help save Hilton."

A meeting scheduled for May 20.

"Look at this street, there are beautiful homes on it, I'm just afraid if we build an apartment complex that is 5 feet off the road, this area will lose some of its feel," said Pritchard.
