COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The race for the Muscogee County School Board District 6 seat brings two candidates to the forefront, Mark Cantrell, and Eddie Obleton.
Cantrell is seeking his third four-year term. He's been on the board for the past seven years and is the CEO for Action Building. For 25 years he's worked as the local director for St. Jude Children's Hospital. He says his best interest is for everyone in the Muscogee County School District and says his experience proves it.
"I've done a good job. I feel like over the last seven and a half years, I've addressed concerns with the parents and the best thing for the parents and children out there," says Cantrell.
Cantrell says he wants to continue serving the students in the position that he's filled.
"I've had years and years of community service experience and wants to continue to do so as your school board representative," says Cantrell.
Running against him is Dr. Eddie Obleton, who's been an educator for forty years and says he wants to better serve students in the District 6 seat.
"I believe in comprehensiveness. I believe in comprehensive schools and I believe in providing whatever we can for the students we serve. I want to bring some civility to the school board," says Obleton.
He has served as an associate professor of educational leadership at Columbus State University and assistant principal at Russell County High School. He was Muscogee County School District's secondary education director, principal of Shaw High School and former principal of the now-closed Marshall Middle School.
"No one has to teach me about education. I've taught about education and all that preparation has led me to this point of being able to say I'm ready to be a board member," says Obelton.
"If you look at my track record, you can see that I've been a hard-working school board member for the public. If someone is doing a good job, that's why I'm asking people to please support me again," says Cantrell.
Both candidates want your support. It's up to you to decide who will represent the Muscogee County School Board in District 6.
