FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - While many Fort Benning officials were preparing for the annual Independence Celebration, another celebration also happened on the post.
More than 100 people graduated Friday afternoon at the 5th annual consolidated graduation on Fort Benning.
"The reason we have graduation every year is because we completely understand you have soldiers and family members constantly moving, going from one installation to the next. So, part of that is being able to celebrate them," said Education Services Specialist, Shannon Gardner.
The graduates completed various degree levels ranging from certificates to doctoral degree. They are also earning these degrees from 16 post-secondary institutions.
"These are various family members, active duty members and also veterans. We have civilians who are all tied to Fort Benning community," said Gardner.
The graduates ranged from age 22 to 58, representing non-traditional students who over the years had to juggle deployments and families, but still achieved their dreams.
"Today I graduated with a bachelor of science in sports and health sciences," said Rochelle Ralph, a graduate of Georgia Military College.
For Ralph, an active duty soldier and a single mom, she said she never thought she' would make it this far.
"It feels great. It's an unbelievable feeling. I'm a single parent. I definitely do it for her and being a soldier is great, really great," said Ralph.
