OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The City of Opelika is currently investigating an incident involving a seven-year-old at the Covington Recreation Center.
A group of children was attending a day camp at the center.
According to a statement released by the city, lifeguards heard a commotion and found the child unresponsive Thursday, June 21 at 11:30 a.m. There were three certified lifeguards on duty at the time.
A lifeguard performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived at the scene. The child was taken to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance and later transported to the Children's of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
His attorney says, "Our seven-year-old client received a serious head injury at the Covington Recreation Center pool in Opelika on June 21, 2018. Because of the seriousness of his injury, he was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham where he is currently under the care of some of the finest physicians in the country. His injury status is critical; however, we are hopeful and prayerful that he will recover. His mother is at his bedside and she and the family request privacy during this time."
