LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) – The LaGrange Police Department is investigating a murder that happened Wednesday around midnight.
According to a police report, officers from the police department responded to the area of Lexington Park Drive in reference to an armed robbery attempt with shots fired into a vehicle.
As officers were arriving in the area, a second caller reported a person lying in the roadway on Lexington Park Drive.
An unresponsive male was located lying in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds to the torso. Emergency medical aid was provided, and he was taken to Well Star West Georgia where he was pronounced dead.
Resident Kavarious Perry lives just a few streets over. Perry says he thought he heard fireworks going off around the time police say shots were fired.
"Last night was kind of an outlier as to what happens here," says Perry.
"As the officers were responding, they were looking for a vehicle that had been shot into," says Lieutenant Dale Strickland with the LaGrange Police Department. "Turning into the subdivision, they located a body laying in the middle of the road."
Officers were also able to locate the first caller who indicated that as they drove onto Lexington Park Drive they observed a vehicle in the roadway with an individual appearing to be working on the car.
As they approached the seemingly broken-down vehicle two individuals approached their vehicle and began shooting. The complainant sped away from that scene and met with officers at their home in the Lexington Park neighborhood.
"As they approached or got closer, they observed another subject, a heavier set black man, as described by the suspects to police, walking toward their vehicle toward the road from the wood line. That person had a mask on and a firearm. At that point the individuals in the car thought they were about to be robbed," says Strickland.
Witnesses say the two men began shooting at their car. One of the passengers in the car suffered a small cut to his foot. Residents say they were shocked to hear about the incident.
Officers did observe damage to their vehicle from multiple gunshots. One of the occupants of the vehicle suffered a small cut to his foot and the other two were not injured.
Investigators are still working to identify the body found at the scene and describe the one suspect still on the loose as a male.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the LaGrange Police Department (706) 883-2620.
