LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - Just before midnight Wednesday, LaGrange police say shots rang out just outside the Lexington Park neighborhood.
Resident Kavarious Perry lives just a few streets over. Perry says he thought he heard fireworks going off around the time police say shots were fired.
"Last night was kind of an outlier as to what happens here," says Perry.
Officers initially responded to an armed robbery call, but as officers pulled up to the scene, a second caller reported a person lying on the road.
"As the officers were responding, they were looking for a vehicle that had been shot into," says Lieutenant Dale Strickland with the LaGrange Police Department. "Turning into the subdivision, they located a body lying in the middle of the road."
The unidentified male was unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was quickly taken to nearby WellStar West Georgia Medical Center where he later died.
Police say the details surrounding the incident are still under investigation, but they believe it is possible the two unidentified male suspects were staging a scene of repairing a broken down vehicle parked on Lexington Dr.
One of those men ended up dead in the road after an attempted armed robbery of the witness' vehicle with three people inside as it entered the neighborhood according to early investigation possibilities.
"As they approached or got closer, they observed another subject, a heavier set black man, as described by the suspects to police, walking toward their vehicle toward the road from the wood line. That person had a mask on and a firearm. At that point the individuals in the car thought they were about to be robbed," says Strickland.
Witnesses say the two men began shooting at their car. One of the passengers in the car suffered a small cut to his foot. Residents say they were shocked to hear about the incident.
"Overall, we've never had crime in here. It's always quiet, nice and peaceful," says Perry.
Investigators are still working to identify the body found at the scene and describe the one suspect still on the loose as a male.
