LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - A K9 in East Alabama is getting top-notch protection.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office received a fully equipped bullet proof vest for their four-legged deputy, Smoke.
Vested Interest in K9s, a nonprofit organization based in Massachusetts, sent the sheriff's department the vest for free.
Sheriff Jay Jones says the highly trained dogs serve on the front line and this new protection takes service to the next level.
"Anyone out there who has a pet, they know how important it is to take care of those animals. Of course with Smoke, our canine, it's important to us because he's a deputy sheriff just like everyone else, except he's on four legs instead of two," says Jones.
The sheriff's office has a hand full of K9s that do everything from sniffing out bombs to searching for drugs. Jones says he is grateful for vest given to the office.
