Accused killers of Columbus auto shop owner in 2004 still await trial

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - It's been fourteen years and now attorneys are gearing up for a murder trial garnering national attention over the last decade.

In 2014, Columbus police arrested Rebecca Haynie and Donald Keith Phillips.

The arrest of Haynie, Kirby's widow, and her friend, Donald Phillips reopened a decade-old cold case.

Four years after the arrest, defense attorneys for Haynie and Phillips believe the likelihood of a fair trial is becoming even harder.

Citing national attention, defense attorneys believe it will be hard to find unbiased jurors ahead of the scheduled September 17 trial.

Haynie and Phillips, both facing charges of malice murder have bonded out of the Muscgoee County Jail and are awaiting trial.

A pre-trial hearing set for August 1 will go over evidence, trial issues, and the future of this case,
