LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) - Some teens in LaGrange were presented with a challenge to help people in East Africa.
A few months ago, Zsa Heard, CEO of the LaGrange Housing Authority, presented her teen summer employees with the challenge of collecting 500 pairs of shoes to ship to Uganda for those in need.
Now, the teens are gearing up to send the shoes. They collected over 800 pairs of shoes---and still counting.
"She said to go for 500 in the beginning and we were discouraged. We thought it was going to be very hard, but now we have over 500. People are still calling, texting, sending messages on Facebook, and everything to get in touch with us, saying they want to give. We're getting people from Atlanta, Lanett, and Valley just wanting to give and help," says Alexis Fuller and Braylen Dozier, summer teen employees.
The project is doing so well that the group has decided to extend the deadline until donations start to slow down. Shoes are being collected at the Samuel L. Tucker Building on Chatham Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
