COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. delivered the keynote address for a Columbus church's 155th anniversary celebration Friday night.
A packed house came out to hear Dr. Jerry Young. Young oversees 33,000 churches consisting of 7.5 million people in the United States.
The celebration took place at the Green Island Country Club and was hosted by Greater Shady Grove Baptist Church.
Young delivered a message about how to keep the church relevant in today's society.
"The message of Christ is the same. What we are trying to get people to do is extend his life and express his love. How do we get people to do that...I think ultimately in terms of millennials and the like is to make that type of commitment. We are trying to make that happen," said Young.
State Representatives Carolyn Hugley and Calvin Smyre along with Mayor Elect Skip Henderson were in attendance. City Councilors Mimi Woodson and Evelyn Turner Pug were also present.
