COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A father is now behind bars after running over his son in his own drive-way around three months ago in South Columbus.
Trenton Cook, 24, has been charged with vehicular homicide and failure to exercise due care. Back in May, Cook was returning home in a 2002 Ford Explorer when he pulled into the driveway on Bond Avenue striking 22-month-old Zakai Cook.
The toddler was immediately taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he later died of blood forced head injury.
"I know the family is hurt. Really hurt. She didn't even get a chance to hold the baby or take care of the baby. I know she's hurt," says neighbor Ty Qwon James.
We got in touch with a family member who tells us the family does not want to offer a comment after the arrest.
"Everyone grieves in different ways," says neighbor Linda Mayberry.
Neighbors say they are trying to heal as a community
"We need to do better in life to bring our community together. Let's work as a team. That's all I can say," explains James."And offer their condolences and prayers to the family affected."
"I'm sorry that he was charged. I'm sorry he was distracted. God bless them, and God be with them. We have to forgive him in order for us to get over it. We have to forgive him," he says.
Cook will appear in Recorder's Court on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 9 a.m.
