COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- A local Subway sandwich artist has been awarded the Fresh Start Scholarship.
Keith Willis announced that Scholarship America has awarded a scholarship to Columbus' Jashaylah C. Johnson, a local Subway sandwich artist, under the Subway Fresh Start Scholarship program.
Keith Willis, the Cheif Operating Officer says, "we are very proud of Jashaylah for the pursuit of her educational goals. Jashaylah has worked hard to provide our guests with a great restaurant experience."
Johnson is a recent graduate of Northside High School and plans to attend Columbus State University in the fall where she plans to major in Nursing. She has worked for Keith and Sherwanda Willis' location in Fort Mithcell, Al for two years.
"First person I called, of course, was my boss: Mr. Keith," says Johnson. "I was like, 'Mr. Keith, I got it!' I was like, 'I didn't think I'd get it!' and everything."
Keith says, "she is very deserving of this honor and we wish her continued success in college."
Scholarships were awarded to 200 employees of Subway restaurants in the United States in memory of the chain's co-founder Fred DeLuca. DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant in August 1965 when he was a 17-year old high school graduate simply looking to help fund his college education.
