COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Today, July 31, marks five years since a crash that killed a 32-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department while he was in the line of duty.
53-year-old Corporal Thomas Keith Slay, known as Keith, was heading to provide back-up to a meth lab operation when a driver pulled out in front of him.
Cpl. Slay swerved in an attempt to miss the car, running off the road and into a utility pole.
Russell County Sheriff's Deputy Brad Evans was in the car with Cpl. Slay at the time of the accident. He was initially listed in critical condition but survived his injuries.
No charges were brought against the 73-year-old driver of the second vehicle.
