(WTVM) - A longtime local school is about to open its doors to students after a $55 million rebuild that sets it up for the future of education.
"We have been anticipating this for a very long time," says Spencer High School teacher Clyde Johnson.
Johnson has been teaching at Spencer, heading into his 18th year. He teaches 12th grade; English, Journalism and Multi-cultural literature.
"I think it's just super exciting that students get to be able to use this in the classroom," says Johnson.
Speaking of technology, this school has a lot of it. Soon, students will too.
According to Spencer High Principal, Dr. Johnny Freeman, students at the school will be provided a kindle-like netbook to take home for school work.
"That will give students an opportunity to have access to technology at home that they may not have had in the past," says Freeman.
The new high school is more than double the size of the previous school and accommodates 1,100 students. The building located at 1000 Fort Benning road in Columbus, features state of the art technology in each room, giving students opportunities to learn in new ways.
Another addition to the building, every classroom is equipped with a 55 inch LCD touch smart screen, which acts as a whiteboard for students.
Johnson, or "Mr. J" as his students call him, says teachers are loving the upgrades, too
"To me, it just feels like a new beginning because everything is kind of like the unknown... so it rejuvenates me for another 18 years I hope," says Johnson.
When you walk into the new Spencer High on the ground level, you're greeted by the media center, the school cafe, auditorium, special education center, and art classrooms. Heading up to the second floor you'll find classrooms for social studies, English Language Acquisition, Spanish and math. The third floor is dedicated to CTAE along with Science. Inside the school, you'll also find a wing dedicated to JROTC with an indoor shooting range.
Don't forget athletics. The new school features a turf field for Junior Varsity Football games. The turf field is also where Varsity football will practice and soccer games will be held. Outdoor space also includes Softball and Baseball fields.
Freeman is heading into his 5th year at the school and says the new school brings a new atmosphere with it.
"The teachers are excited I think its just going to not only rejuvenate the spirit of the teachers but the entire community," says Freeman. "We're going to spend some time the first couple of days just making sure that everyone's acclimated and understand where their classes are and how to navigate the building because it really is, it's a pretty large facility."
"They have a root in their school and they believe in their school," says Johnson.
Spencer will open its doors to students, teachers, and faculty for the first day of school, August 8th.
