In the spirit of giving back to students before school starts, one church brought fun, comfort and supplies to families living in Bull Creek Apartments.
The faithful from Edge Church in Columbus hosted their service outside the neighborhood, as residents recover from one of Columbus' most recent deadly shootings.
"We're here to strengthen the community, to encourage the community," said Vincent Bell, lead pastor of Edge Church, "and comfort them; so we decided to close our doors and come out here for service."
They wanted to supply every student with the necessary supplies needed to start school and help out during the school year to resupply the students with refills of supplies.
Bell said his congregation also took the opportunity to give back to the youngest members of the neighborhood, by donating backpacks stuffed with school supplies, just days before students return to class.
"We're giving away 300 backpacks," Bell said. "We have to do 'Matthew 28' which says, 'Go out to them.' We decided that four times a year, we're going to go out into the community and bring the church to them."
Bell then said this year's back to school jam is about "making each day count" and setting students, teachers and parents for success.
