COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A man charged with murder pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday.

Wesley Barber is accused of killing a Cataula woman back in 2015 when he allegedly pushed her off a porch at a friend's home during a barbecue cookout.

Shanita Rutherford,24, suffered a broken neck when she tumbled five feet, landing on a concrete slab next to her friend's house on 4th Avenue in Columbus.

After seven months of intense therapy and rehab at several Atlanta area medical facilities, Rutherford died.

Barber pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter with 20 to 14 to serve.

In court, Barber apologized for what happened and asked for forgiveness.

He said they were drinking and horsing around when things got out of hand.

Barber will be sentenced Thursday morning at 10 a.m. in Judge Gil McBride's courtroom.
