PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - A new food truck park coming to the downtown area of Phenix City is raising eyebrows and creating excitement for those in the area.
"It's a great way to get people to meet other people. Some of them don't get to go out of town, so I think it's a good idea," says community resident Anthony Hodge.
The Phenix City Downtown Redevelopment Authority says it is leasing a piece of property between the 13th and 14th Street bridge on Whitewater Avenue to create the park.
"This gives us a great temporary use that will get people downtown. The more people we can get downtown, the better we're able to then sell our downtown," says Assistant City Manager Stephen Smith.
"This is something the community has been asking for, for some time. It's a green space area for people to be able to come and enjoy. We've had no resistance, no issues, or problems whatsoever. We're fortunate to the Bradley Company for leasing this property to us for this period of time," says Shaun Culligan, economic development manager for Phenix City.
The redevelopment authority voted unanimously on this addition. They say residents and visitors can see it open as early as Friday, August 17.
"It helps beautify the city and provide another amenity to our citizens. It's a place for the city to come and enjoy themselves at very little cost," says Smith.
"Future developments and future plans come from them, so we're just excited to bring this ultimately to the community," Culligan says.
They say long term, they're hoping to build an art portion as an entertainment venue for fun activities.
"In a few years, Phenix City is going to look a lot different," says Smith.
