FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning celebrated its 78th National Airborne Day on Thursday.

The day was observed with a commemorative jump by the cadre of the 1st Battalion 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

National Airborne Day traces its heritage back to 1940 when 48 soldiers successfully completed the army's first official airborne jump over Lawson Field at Fort Benning.

The soldiers made history by becoming the U.S. Army's first paratroopers.

"It's beyond just the badge or the paratrooper wings that you put on your chest. It's about the bond and the brotherhood of paratroopers around the world just showing that team spirit," said Tracy Huff, president of the Liberty Jump Team.

The Liberty Jump Team supported by the 1-507th conducted the Airborne operation out of the C-47 Skytrain. The team members represented paratroopers from all eras by wearing period uniforms.
