FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A Fort Benning soldier died in Afghanistan Monday in an apparent insider attack, according to the Department of Defense.

The department says Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Bolyard was a senior noncommissioned officer in the 3rd Squadron, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade.

A soldier on post shared his thoughts following Bolyard's death.  Sgt. 1st Class David Stout, who served with Bolyard says his loss will be greatly felt.

"He was a common-sense leader. He was a soldier's soldier and he was a thrill to be around," says Stout.

Stout says the unit will not be the same without Bolyard. Military officials continue to investigate his death.
