MANVEL, Texas (KHOU) — A community in Texas is mourning the loss of an 8-year-old boy who choked on a grape at school.

Nicholas Gray was a third-grader at Pomona Elementary. He died Feb. 10 after district officials said he choked on a grape during snack time at school.

Despite efforts by school staff and emergency responders, the grape was lodged too far down his throat and Nicholas did not survive.

On Saturday morning, dozens gathered at a park to celebrate Nicholas’ life. Friends, family and teachers shared memories of Nicholas.

Nicholas was a Cub Scout and one of five siblings. He is remembered for being lighthearted and fun.

Kenzie Gray, Nicholas’ mother, said her son will never be forgotten.

“I want you to know that in your absence, we’ll never forget about you, we’ll live in your name and we’ll honor your name every day,” Gray said.

Nicholas’ father said his son made an impact on the world in just a short time.

“I truly feel, yes, it was a short time, but Nicholas fulfilled his purpose,” his father said. “He was truly my angel.”
