WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Nearly all industries have been impacted by Artificial Intelligence. Goldman Sachs estimates 300 million jobs will be impacted by the emerging technology by 2030. AI is reshaping industries by the day, resulting in jobs being transformed or erased. The changes are bringing a greater need for AI oversight.

“People need to understand that there still needs to be human involvement,” Barry Jones, a Vice President at X2X said. X2X is an AI governance company. Jones said there’s not enough oversight AI oversight right now.

“Imagine an AI assistant preparing financial reports,” Jones said. “That’s a potentially productive tool. But just imagine if that AI system provided that critical financial information outside of the company’s internal workings.”

Before Congress left Capitol Hill for the midterms, several congressmembers made clear where they stood on what role the government should play on regulation.

“Well, look, anytime you can give the federal government out of it, I think we’re better off,” Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) said. “We don’t want to stifle innovation. But at the same time, we got to get this right. That’s the key. We got to get a right. I can be a very useful tool, unbelievably useful tool. But there are some concerns and there are some dangers there.”

“First, the United States needs to address the very real risks created by increasingly powerful AI systems, and these decisions need to be made by the American people through their representatives,” Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said.

Jones said big picture, self-governance isn’t enough.

“But to say that something is self-governing is like having the fox watching the henhouse,” Jones said. “You really need to have a third party, layer in some cases, even the government saying these are the things that I can do and I cannot do.”

Jones said that private oversight is creating roles that have been replaced by technology. Microsoft recently announced they offered 60,000 employees buyouts due to AI. Jones has advice for people looking for a career pivot due to AI.

“Start learning AI,” Jones said. “Understand how it applies to your profession. Also understand that judgement, experience, trust and accountability matter. The goal shouldn’t be to compete with the machine. The goal should be to become someone who knows the useful power of the technology and using it responsibly.”

Efforts to regulate Artificial Intelligence are stalled on Capitol Hill but the 120th Congress could take up the rapidly evolving technology in January.
